The Arts Us Camp Teranga for youth is now in full swing with our Garden Education Volunteers leading the garden education sessions every Tuesday and Thursday morning through the end of July. This is the first year that we have taken full responsibility for setting the curriculum and leading the camp.
The gardening program is part of a summer camp for youth entering 2nd through 4th grades. Approximately 70 kids are participating, with half attending the garden session on each of the two days.
The garden itself serves as the “classroom” for the youth and has never looked better thanks to the weekly dedication of Garden Education Volunteers and plants provided by the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. The garden also serves as a source of produce for the Gardens for Good program serving the Central Hi-Rise near University and Dale avenues.
There are plenty of opportunities to join other Garden Education Volunteers participating in this program whether you like to join in the energy and excitement of the kids in the garden, work with a team taking care of the beautiful garden, or harvest produce and help to deliver it to those in need. The youth camp continues through the end of July while opportunities to help maintain the garden or participate in the Gardens for Good harvesting and delivery both continue through the summer and into the fall.
