Chasing flowers native to Minnesota is what friends Phyllis Root and Kelly Povo do. They are curious, adventuresome, smart, and ethical as they travel around the state, visiting some of the diverse habitats within each of its four biomes. Their first book, Searching for Minnesota’s Native Wildflowers, was published in 2018. But there was more searching to do, particularly for blooming flowers in the unique habitats where they had evolved.

This second  book is chock full of gorgeous half-page photographs of the plants they discovered as they traveled from Lake Superior’s rocky North Shore to a conifer swamp and then fens, a Jack pine woodland, sand dunes, a dry hill prairie, rocky outcrops, a forested floodplain, a goat prairie, and the Driftless area. At the culmination of their searching, they discovered that the ditches and roadsides they had driven by were also full of blooming native wildflowers. Some of their most unusual finds included Ghost Pipe (Monotropa uniflora) and Rose Pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides). The book includes a helpful section listing places to go in each of the habitats they visited. There is also a helpful glossary and an extensive index.
