A Note from the Master Gardeners
We just wrapped up a fun two weeks at the State Fair — thanks to all who dropped by our booth with questions and stories of your garden adventures!
As the season changes, we’re reflecting on another bountiful summer. Once again, we were able to interact with thousands of Ramsey County residents at community gardens, children’s and senior programming, local farmer’s markets and neighborhood events.
Though the days are getting shorter, we still have plenty of opportunities to connect. Or, if you’re interested in getting more involved, you can join us as a Master Gardener volunteer! The University of MN Extension is accepting applications for 2026 until October 1st.
Remember, you can always write or call us with your questions, or visit the Extension website for helpful gardening information.

Fall Garden Information
How to treat pesky fungus gnats in houseplants
As cooler weather brings houseplants indoors, many plant owners deal with fungus gnats. While harmless to humans, they can stress plants, especially seedlings and delicate roots. Check out these tips from the University of Minnesota Extension.
Consider adding native grasses to your landscape
As Minnesota’s trees turn brilliant shades of red and orange, ornamental grasses are becoming a favorite in gardens across the state. With their rich colors, unique textures, and graceful movement, these grasses add something special — and provide essential nutrients to local pollinators.
Climate-resilient landscape trees for Minnesota
With recent storms damaging trees across the state, you may be wondering what to plant as replacements. Brandon Miller, Tiffany Enzenbacher and Laura Irish-Hanson, horticulturists at the University of Minnesota, created a list of climate-resilient, underused landscape trees that are suitable for urban environments.
Watch for migratory birds this fall
Autumn offers some of Minnesota’s best bird watching, with mild temperatures, congregating flocks and vibrant forests enhancing bird hikes and road trips. The Mississippi River Flyway is one of North America's most traveled routes during spring and fall bird migrations. Check out this guide from Explore Minnesota, and learn more from Extension about how migration patterns are changing as the climate warms.
Donate extra produce
Are you finding yourself with far too many zucchini, tomatoes, or herbs as the season comes to an end? Don’t let it go to waste! There are several opportunities to donate extra produce in Ramsey County. Check out the county’s website for more information.
Be prepared for severe weather
As the climate warms, we’re experiencing more weather extremes — including heavy precipitation and prolonged drought. The University of Minnesota’s Climate Adaptation Partnership put together these resources to help you prepare for, respond to, and recover from the effects of severe weather and natural disasters.
Keep storm drains clear of leaves and debris
When drains are clogged, excess nutrients, sediments and pollutants can enter our local waterways. You can help alleviate this problem by sweeping clean drains near you, especially during the fall season. If you’re out clearing leaves, remember to leave some on the ground in your garden beds! Perfectly raked lawns and gardens lack critical food and shelter for bees and many other pollinators. Read more from the University of Missouri Extension.
