As the program coordinator supporting our incredible volunteer community here in Ramsey County, I want to share an important update with you regarding the name of our program.
As many of you know, the name of the Ramsey County Master Gardener program has been under discussion for quite some time. At the request of the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners, Ramsey County and University of Minnesota Extension are now partnering to rename the volunteer program in Ramsey County. University of Minnesota Extension respects the language preferences and culture of Ramsey County as a valued partner and has agreed to the change. The statewide program will continue under its current name and branding.
A group of Ramsey County volunteer leaders have been invited to participate in a small task force that will provide input on potential new name options, advise on developing a strategy to introduce the new name, and help shape a plan for implementing the change by the end of 2025. I, along with state leadership team members Diane Greiwe and Jamie Spanks, will be part of the task force. A leadership group, which includes representatives from Ramsey County Administration, the Master Gardener statewide program and the Extension Dean’s Office, will provide input and guidance of this work.
For more information, please view this FAQ, which will be updated as work progresses.
We know change can lead to questions and uncertainty, along with opportunities to engage further with our audiences. We’re committed to keeping you informed and will share updates when new information is available. You may also reach out to us by email at rcname@umn.edu.
Your commitment and contributions to our community continue to be the foundation of this program.
Thank you for your continued service and your patience and support as we move forward together.
With gratitude,

Darren Lochner
