Use of Program Names

Ramsey County Garden Education Volunteer Program OR Ramsey County Master Gardener Volunteer Program

The University of Minnesota Extension renamed the program to the Ramsey County Extension Garden Education Volunteer Program to respect a request from the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners, in alignment with a countywide initiative to remove the word “master” from official county documents and agreements to reflect the diversity of the Ramsey County community.

The public presentation of the program name in Ramsey County has changed; however, the national and statewide program names have remained the same. Volunteers in Ramsey County will receive two sets of badges and apparel; it is important to present the correct credentials in different environments. Please use the following guidance based on the activity location and the sponsoring organization.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Darren dlochner@umn.edu or mgweb@umn.edu for clarification.

1. For volunteer activities that take place inside of Ramsey County and are supported or organized by the local Ramsey County group: Use the Ramsey County Garden Education Volunteer Program badge and apparel

2. For volunteer activities that take place outside of Ramsey County and are supported by the state program, the national program or individual volunteers: Use of the Master Gardener badge and apparel are preferred, but the "Ramsey County Garden Education Volunteer" badge and apparel are also acceptable

3. For volunteering at the Minnesota State Fair Master Gardener Booth located in Ramsey County, MN: (This event is coordinated by the state program and gathers volunteers from around the state.) Use of the Master Gardener badge and apparel are preferred, but "Ramsey County Garden Education Volunteer" badge and apparel are also acceptable
